Management and Maintenance

Support groups are beneficial in the total process of undergoing weight loss surgery. Participation in a weight loss surgery support group is a prerequisite to having weight loss surgery at Wesley.

Because of our commitment to quality care, Wesley offers a monthly support group free of charge. The support group focuses on learning a new relationship with food. A typical support session includes a presentation and discussion on the support group topic and nutrition topic. Time for questions is saved at the end of every meeting for patients who are at the beginning of the weight loss surgery journey. Meetings may include an “ask the doctor” segment, speakers and social interaction time. Group topics include dealing with not only nutritional and physical health, but also emotional, mental, psychological and spiritual well-being.

Group members are surrounded by people who understand and support their goals, receive up-to-date weight loss information and consider issues in the context of the disease of obesity. They also have the opportunity to discuss personal or professional issues that arise from weight loss surgery.

Following weight loss surgery, patients are faced not only with new eating and drinking behaviors, but also making sense of the role food plays in their lives.
